Google introduces advertising into Google News
When introduced in 2001, Google News was ad free and this was one of the reasons why people liked Google News. The page was clean and contained reliable news items sourced from top news sites like the New York Times and Washington Post. Google has now introduced ads to the news results aimed at leveraging its popularity in making money. Whenever you make a search on Google news, in addition to the news results, Google News will return a list of ‘sponsored links’ and ads related to that search term.
It’s a known fact that Google makes most of its money from internet search advertising and has introduced advertising on its popular properties like you tube, Google maps and Google finance during the previous financial year. It is not surprising then that this time it was Google News’s turn to feature ads. But the fact that Google now has advertisements on Google News may alienate its huge fan base.
This move by Google may also raise the hackles of newspapers and other media outlets.
